Volunteers

Lion Wood is owned by Norwich City Council and managed by the Norwich Fringe Project which is the council department in charge of woodland and meadow green spaces.

A group of volunteers established the “Friends of Lion Wood” group in June 2001 after receiving grants from Barclays Bank and the Thorpe Hamlet Community Forum. The woods had become a dumping ground for rubbish and choked with invasive plants so it was clear that something had to be done. The original group seems to have disbanded around 2005 but local residents continued to keep the woods free from litter. The Conversation Volunteers (TCV) also ran ocasional work parties with Norwich Fringe Project.

In March 2020, a Facebook Group was set up by Martin Rezjek to connect those interested in the woods.

In February 2024, the Lion Wood Conservation Group became officially licensed by Norwich City Council to lead work parties and conservation activities in the woods. The group works closely with Norwich Fringe Project and have agreed a basic work plan to guide activites.
